BILIARY DISORDERS

Who can be a donor?

There are two methods of organ donations for liver transplant in India:Living Donor: In Living Donor Liver Transplation (LDLT), a portion of the healthy liver is removed from the donor’s body and transplanted into the patient’s body. The operation is safe and the liver grows back to full in as less as 3 weeks time. To be a living donor:

  • You must be between 18-60 years old.
  • You should be healthy, with no major medical ailments (especially related to liver)
  • Your blood group should match with the recipient’s blood group
  • You must be a non-smoker/drinker for at least 45 days prior to the surgery
  • You should be ready to donate willingly and should be in a position to understand the surgical as well as post-operation recovery instructions.

Cadaveric Donor: This kind of donation is possible through families who are willing to donate liver or any other organs of a brain dead family member. If a person has suffered brain injury or have had a fatal brain haemorrhage, in such circumstances, his whole liver can be transplanted to an adult recipient while a small portion is enough for a child. Patients have to register themselves at Individual centres for cadaveric organ allocation in India. Once a liver is available and matches the patient’s blood group, they are called for a transplant based on their MELD score. The recipient has to be ready for immediate surgery as the liver can only be preserved outside the body under strict conditions for upto 12 hours.
